About Botswana
Botswana became independent from the United Kingdom in 1966. The capital city is Gaborone. Other important towns are Francistown, Maun and Kasane.
Botswana is famous for its incredible wildlife and beautiful, untouched landscapes. The country has a great variety of habitats, including the Okavango Delta, the Kalahari Desert, grasslands and savannahs.
These different habitats are home to many species of wildlife, including elephant, lion, leopard, zebra, giraffe, hippo and wildebeest.
Botswana is also famous for its birdlife, with around 550 different bird species.
The Okavango Delta and Chobe National Park are two of the most famous safari destinations in Botswana. Chobe is particularly well known for its large population of elephants.
Botswana has a population of around 2.1 million people and is one of the least densely populated countries in Africa. This gives many parts of the country a wonderfully wild and untouched feeling.

The best period to travel Botswana
May until September are the best months to travel to Botswana.
During these months there is generally less rainfall and temperatures are more comfortable.
The dry season is also a very good time for wildlife viewing because animals gather around the remaining water sources.
Weather and climate
Botswana has a semi-arid climate.
During the summer months temperatures can become very high, while the winter months are generally dry and sunny.
Daytime temperatures can be pleasant, but early mornings and evenings can be surprisingly cold, especially during the winter months.
The seasons in Botswana are opposite to the seasons in Europe.
Travel documents
The travel document requirements depend on your nationality.
Please check the latest entry requirements for your country before travelling to Botswana.
Your passport should have sufficient validity and blank pages for immigration stamps.
Malaria
There is a risk of malaria in parts of Botswana, particularly in the northern safari areas.
Please contact your doctor or a travel health clinic before travelling for personal advice about malaria prevention and medication.
Tipping guideline
Guests often ask us for a guideline for tipping their guides.
This is a difficult question, but to give some advice we would say:
15 – 20 USD per vehicle per day
This is just an indication. Feel free to tip at your own discretion.
