Namibia is one of the most impressive countries in Africa. The landscapes are spectacular and change constantly as you travel through the country.
The capital city is Windhoek. Other important towns are Swakopmund, Walvis Bay and Rundu.
Most of Namibia is covered by desert and dry landscapes. The country is famous for the Namib Desert, the oldest desert in the world, but Namibia also has mountains, canyons, grasslands and beautiful nature reserves.
One of the most famous places in Namibia is Etosha National Park. The park is home to elephants, lions, leopards, rhinos, giraffes, zebras and many different antelope species.
Namibia also has a long coastline along the Atlantic Ocean. Part of this coastline is known as the Skeleton Coast. The area is famous for its rugged landscapes, shipwrecks and large seal colonies.
Sossusvlei, with its enormous red sand dunes, is another highlight of Namibia. The dunes around Sossusvlei are among the most photographed landscapes in Africa.

The best period to travel Namibia
March, April, October and November are good months to travel through Namibia.
During these months temperatures are generally more comfortable and wildlife can be easier to spot.
The dry season is also a good period for wildlife viewing because there is less vegetation and animals tend to gather around waterholes.
The best time can also depend on the part of Namibia you are visiting and the type of experience you are looking for.
Weather and climate
Namibia has a mainly dry and semi-desert climate.
Temperatures can vary considerably between day and night.
During the summer months temperatures can become very high, while winter days are generally pleasant and sunny. Early mornings and evenings can be surprisingly cold, especially in the desert and during the winter months.
Rainfall is limited in most of the country and can vary considerably from one region to another.
Travel documents
Your passport needs to be valid for at least 6 months the moment you leave Namibia.
You only need a visa for Namibia if you stay for 3 months or longer.
You can buy that visa when entering the country.
Malaria
Within Namibia there are areas with malaria.
The authorities advise to protect yourself against malaria.

Driving in Namibia
Namibia is a wonderful country for a self-drive safari, but distances can be long.
Many roads are gravel roads and driving times can therefore be longer than expected.
Always allow enough time for your journey and avoid driving after dark whenever possible.
When driving on gravel roads, reduce your speed and keep a safe distance from other vehicles.
A 4×4 vehicle is recommended for many routes, especially when travelling to more remote areas.
Namibia facts for kids
Namibia is located in the south-west of Africa and is famous for its spectacular landscapes.
The country has enormous sand dunes, deserts, mountains, canyons, savannahs and a long Atlantic coastline.
The Namib Desert is one of the oldest deserts in the world. The enormous red dunes around Sossusvlei are one of Namibia’s most famous sights.
Etosha National Park is home to many different animals. You can see elephant, lion, leopard, rhino, giraffe, zebra and many different antelope species.
Namibia is also home to desert-adapted animals. Some animals have learned to survive with very little water in the dry landscape.
Along the Skeleton Coast you can find large colonies of Cape fur seals. The coastline is also famous for the remains of ships that were wrecked in the rough Atlantic waters.
