Rwanda is since 1962 independent of Belgium.
The capital city of Rwanda is Kigali. Other big cities in Rwanda are Butare, Gitarama, Ruhengeri and Gisenyi.
Rwanda has a turbulent history. In 1994 there raged a civil war (genocide) where Tutsis and moderate Hutus were killed. There died approximately 500,000 to 1 million people. At present the country is stable. Approximately 60% of the Rwandan population lives below the poverty line.

The landscape of Rwanda is hilly and characterized by many mountains, tropical rain forests and volcanoes. Throughout its tea plantations and fields for agriculture. There are many national parks where many wild species occur such as gorillas, lions, giraffes, elephants, leopards, hyenas and hippos. In addition there are about 275 bird species.

Best time to visit Rwanda

January, July, August and September are the best months to travel to Rwanda.
This avoids the lengthy rainy seasons.

Weather and Climate

Rwanda has a tropical climate. The temperatures range throughout the year by around 25 degrees.

Travel documents

You must have a passport valid for at least 6 months upon arrival in Rwanda.
A visa is required. You can apply online or in person at the Embassy of Rwanda in The Hague.

Immunization (vaccination)

For a visit to Rwanda, it is mandatory to let you vaccinate against yellow fever.
In addition, there are one or several vaccinations that are recommended.

Malaria

In Rwanda malaria occurs.

Tap water

It is not recommended to drink water from the tap.
Its better to buy bottled water.

Gorilla Tracking

In the South-west corner of Uganda you find Bwindi National Park.
​This is home for about half the population of the gentle giants, the gorillas.
The other half of Ugandas gorilla population lives in Volcanoes National Park. Volcanoes National Park can be found on the border with Rwanda.

Chimpansee Tracking

In the jungle of Nyungwe Forest (Rwanda) you can visit the chimpansees. A professional guide will guide you during this amazing hike to search for the Chimps.
The minimum ago to join this awesome Chimpansee tracking is 15 years in Uganda and 16 years in Rwanda. In the jungle of Nyungwe Forest about 500 chimpansee individuals live.

The Chipansee permit cost about $ 50,- per person.
